Protection Methods for Concrete Structures

Researching ways to protect concrete structures from damages? A range of products like Hexacure can prove to be pretty useful in this scenario.

Given below are the simple ways which will help you to protect your concrete structures from damages and deterioration.

  1. Hydrophobation
  2. Painting
  3. Impregnation
  4. Sealers
  5. Coating

However, remember that there is a difference between different methods of surface protection and that may affect the outcome you are expecting.

In the impregnation system, the protection is attained through prevention of capillary absorption of water by your concrete structure.

Narrowing of the capillary ducts or Hydrophobation of the pores at the walls results to film formation on these walls, and depending upon the material used for surface protection, you can prevent the capillary absorption of water by concrete.

Thirdly, the sealers or coatings result into a closed thin film on the surface of concrete and hence have better surface protection.

Materials Used for Concrete Structures Protection

The materials used for impregnation, hyperprobation of the concrete surface for protecting concrete structures include:

  • Silicon organic solutions
  • Resins
  • Oils

1.Silicon organic Solutions
  • Siliconates
  • Silanes
  • Siloxanes and
  • Silicon resins

2.Resins

The resins provide protection to concrete surface by forming a thin film on the surface of pores thus narrowing the capillaries. Various resin materials used for this:

  • Polymethylmetacrylates (PMMA)
  • Epoxy resins

3.Oils

Oil is a low molecular, organic compound which is used for impregnation. Linseed oil is the most widely used for impregnation. Linseed oil may be used in these forms:

  • Boiled (linseed) oil
  • Mixture products of boiled (linseed) oil
  • Linseed stand oil and
  • Linseed stand oil with not more than 15% unsaturated organic compounds.

Sealers

Unlike impregnation and hydrophobation, sealers are more effective for protecting the concrete surface by forming a film on the surface. Sealing of concrete surface is done by increasing the applied quantity of an impregnation agent, which forms a film, through the choice of suitable resins. Given below are the plastics which are usually used as sealers for concrete surface:

  1. Epoxy resins (EP)
  2. Polyurethane resins (PU)
  3. Unsaturated polyester resins (UP)
  4. Polymethylmetacrylate resins (PMMA)

Sealers can also be used as a primer for coatings.

Coatings

Coatings give additional protection to concrete surface unlike the sealers. You must consider the fact that coatings, as compared to sealers, have more resistance to the dissemination of the internal moisture. Two types of coating can be used, thin coating and a thick coating.

Thin coatings tend to contour any unevenness of the concrete surface. Thick coatings are used to form as much as possible on a plain surface with certain amount of thickness of 1 mm or larger. Therefore, a thick coating will give you smoothness to any unevenness of the surface.
